Bed and breakfast in Scotland with us at Highfield House and you'll discover a whole lot more besides. Highfield House is a traditional Scottish Manse dating from 1730.

As such it's steeped in history as is the whole area surrounding the Manse. It's situated in the village of Kirknewton ( approx 10 miles from Edinburgh City Centre) with Kirknewton Church directly opposite. Perfect for Scottish holidays.

Kirknewton Parish is situated at the foot of the Pentland Hills (which is dotted with numerous Lochs, Reservoirs, Hill Walks etc).

The Pentlands were inhabited for many centuries by the indiginous Picts. Soon after AD, Rome exerted it's power and conquered this entire area and peoples.

The original Church was founded in 1246 and you are still able view its remains in the burial ground of the present day Church to this day if you so wish.

The new Manse (ie our house as it stands now) was established in 1750 due to the parish being enlarged. 70 years on we see the Manse itself undergoing enlargement. Here is the ' Statistical Account of 1844' description...

Entering more contemporary times, did you know the shale industry, the extraction of oil, owed its existence to the enterprise of a Glasgow chemist, Dr James ‘Paraffin’ Young? It's said a young American visited these works and on his return to the USA set up his own oil company. The name of the young American was Rockerfeller.

In the late 1800’s road improvements and rail gave Kirknewton easy access to Edinburgh and many of Scotlands towns and cities. In fact our 'back road' into Edinburgh is possibly the fastest and easiest route by car into Edinburgh.

The ease both by road and rail with which one can access Edinburgh is the perfect reason not only to explore close to Kirknewton but to also enjoy the Cities visitor attractions and rich heritage too.
